the qualification of an elder (overseer)

(10/14) |

Verses:Titus 1:1 ~ 1:16
Key Verse:8-9. But hospitable, a lover of good, of a sober mind, righteous, holy, self-controlled; Holding to the faithful word, which is according to the teaching of the apostles, that he may be able both to exhort by the healthy teaching and to convict those who oppose.
Topic:the qualification of an elder (overseer)
Emphasis:In 1 Timothy 3:2, footnote 1 says the overseers of a local church are the elders. Two terms refer to the same men: elder, a mature one; and overseer, which refers to the function of an elder. In the local church, the elders have to “shepherd the flock of God among you” (1 Pet 5:1-2); therefore, they have to have a characteristic of godliness, as well as being equipped with truth.
Meditate:Verse 9 says “healthy teaching”. The word “healthy” can sometime be translated into “recovered”, or “healed’, which implies that the teaching of an apostle can heal the spirit of believers and make them healthy. Compare to verse 10-16, which mentions unhealthy words.
Prayer:Lord, please equip me with the apostle’s teaching from the Bible, and let me be prepared to shepherd others with “healthy teaching”.
Hymn:The faith is the economy
