The work of the Comforter (the Spirit)
Verses:John 16:5 ~ 16:15
Key Verse:13. But when He, the Spirit of reality, comes, He will guide you into all the reality; for He will not speak from Himself, but what He hears He will speak; and He will declare to you the things that are coming.
Topic:The work of the Comforter (the Spirit)
Emphasis:The Comforter convicts the world in three aspects: (1) Man’s unique sin is not believing into Jesus Christ who accomplished the salvation for man. (2) Through the righteousness of Jesus, believers can come through Him to the Father. (3) Unbelievers will be judged along with the ruler of this world (Satan).
Meditate:Verses 8-11 indicate how God the Spirit causes us to be saved. Verses 12-15 tell us how He guides us into all the reality. The word “declare” is used three times here. Have we experienced the Comforter’s speaking within us?
Prayer:Lord, thank You for being the Spirit of reality. Cause me every day to experience Your declaring within me concerning You and the things that are coming.
Hymn:684 Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish
